Rosie O'Donnell vs Elisabeth Hasselbeck - Chasing Celebrity

Well the word is out, Rosie O'Donnell has left The View. Rosie asked for an early release from her contract which was due to expire in July I believe and was granted a release.
This comes on the heels of another silly squabble on the show, this time with Elisabeth Hasselbeck. This week's fight got a little rougher than usual as the two got into a pissing match each throwing accusations and some personal digs at each other.

It all went south when the two got into a heated discussion over the Iraq war and Rosie threw the first punch by saying that Hasselbeck didn't stand up for Rosie in the media following Rosie's comments that the U.S. troops were terrorists. Rosie actually went so far as to call Hasselbeck's actions or lack of actions, "cowardly."

The show's producer's never ones to miss an opportunity showed the pair in a split screen so we could watch both of them during the um...heated debate. Hasselbeck told O'Donnell to "defend her own insinuations".

I don't know about you but I'm OK with Rosie packing it in. The View was becoming to sensational for my liking, playing up these arguments that always seem to have Rosie involved. Remember the big free for all between Rosie, Barbara Walters and Donald Trump a couple of months back?

As much as views like to see a little action once and awhile I think these things were just stupid, but highlighted by the producers because of the ratings draw. It's a little like posting porn on a blog, people will come, but is it really the reason you want them there?

Good Luck in your next endeavors Rosie!

Britney Spears Booed

Poor Britney Spears, Britney has fallen into trouble again. Apparently Britney Spears was caught during a "live" performance at House of Blues in Florida faking it when her a CD started skipping blowing the lid off her "live " performance.

Of course the crowd caught on to what was happening and booed the pop star until she covered her face and turned her back to the crowd. She was singing "Do Something" when the CD began skipping.

What makes this even worse is that some of the fans had paid more than $500 per ticket, which is quite a steep price to pay to listen to a CD, especially one that skips.....

Britney Spears is not the first celeb singer to get burned by a skipping CD, and it amazes me that singers will put themselves in such a precarious position, giving the possibility of a CD malfunction. It's stuff like this that ruins careers and really destroys a singer's credibility, which, considering her recent troubles, is something Britney really can't afford to lose.

C'mon Britney, get it together girl.

Paris Hilton Not Appealing

Thelatest news about Paris Hilton and her upcoming jail term for probation violations is that the heiress celebrity is not going to appeal her 45 day sentence. She is going to do the time....

Paris Hilton's lawyer advised the Los Angeles County Superior Court that she is giving up on her appeal and it sounds like Paris will show up on June 5th to begin her sentence. Originally Paris had said the sentence was unfair and that she would appeal it, but she has sinced changed legal counsel and apparently her mind. Butit isn't all bad, if she is a good girl, which of course we all know might be a challenge, given her past activities, she will only have to spend 23 days in the slammer, and that will be in a 'special needs housing unit.' The sentence reduction is based on the old cliche, "time off for good behaviour."

The special needs unit is segregated from the rest of the prison population, known as "gen pop" to prison show afficienados like yours truly. It's where they keep the celebrities, police officers, public officials and other inmates who may not be safe mixed in with the regular inmate crowd.

The good news is Paris Hilton will likely get at least an hour outside her cell each day to shower, watch TV, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on the telephone.
She'll also be issued underwear, which as we all know, is something she hasn't had much of in the past.....

The General Lee

This is a little different celebrity piece, because in this case the celeb is not a person...it's...well, a car. The General Lee to be exact, the 1969 Orange Dodge Charger that was really the star of the "Dukes of Hazard" television show which ran a few seasons back in the early 1980's.

It seems the owner of the General Lee, John Schneider, one of the stars of the original show, (Bo Duke) sold the vehicle on Ebay yesterday, for a whopping $10 million!! Setting a new record as the most expensive item ever sold on Ebay.

The funny thing is, this particular vehicle was never actually in the show, although it does have the signatures of most of the show's stars under the hood. It also does have a claim to some stardom as it was in the movie "Dukes Go To Hollywood"

The General Lee carried Bo and Luke Duke throughout their adventures mainly running from a corrupt legal system in Hazard County. It was a show famous for cars and backroad speeding, and car jumps. Amazingly the General Lee seemed to be able to jump obstacles like rivers and creeks with ease, usually in slow motion. I suspect there were quite a few "General Lees" involved in the show in those days.

Now the General can take pride in being the most expensive item ever sold on Ebay, with a selling bid of nearly 10 million dollars. I would love to have just the commission on that.....

Paris Hilton Sentenced to 45 days In Prison

The life of the star of "The Simple Life" Paris Hilton, just got a little more complicated. A Los Angeles judge sentenced young Paris Hilton to 45 days in county jail Friday for violating her probation. That's 45 days behind bars.

The judge didn't fool around either, Paris has to report to prison June 5th and will not be allowed work release, furloughs, alternative jails or electronic monitoring. Nope, she is going inside for the full term.

What on earth for? You ask. Well, seems Paris Hilton continued to drive with a suspended driver's licence and was in violation of the terms of her probation in an alcohol related reckless driving case.

Paris Hilton tried to play the apologetic card, apologizing to the judge profusely and stating she didn't do it on purpose, but the judge must be what in the old days they called a "hanging judge" because he wasn't buying her story. Good call there Judge, I don't either.

So Paris is off to a woman's jail, unable to pay some cash to get sent to a jail of her choice as some people are allowed to do. Hilton got on the stage...er...I mean stand herself and said that she believed when her licence was suspended the first time she thought the first 30 days were the ones when she was not allowed to drive and in the remaining 90 days she thought she was still allowed to drive for work purposes....huh-uh...yup....

I guess Paris wasn't up to her acting best because the Judge rejected her story, saying, "I can't believe that either attorney did not tell her that the suspension had been upheld. She wanted to disregard everything that was said and continue to drive no matter what."

It sounds like the case might have been a little bizarre as Paris Hilton's mom laughed when jail time was asked for by the prosecutor, and when the judge gave his ruling, she asked for his autograph. Sounds to me like she was toying with a contempt charge.

Saying that the sentence was "uncalled for, inappropriate and bordered on the ludicrous" the defense is planning an appeal. It will be interesting to see how that goes....

Don Imus to Sue CBS

Don Imus, who we all know by now was fired from his radio show for making racial slurs is suing CBS for wrongful dismissal to the tune of $120 million add in some extras and legal fees and the sky is the limit. Of course, they are also willing to settle out of court.

Imus' attorney says that CBS was wrong not to have warned him first. They also wanted him to be controversial, but fired him because he was. The contract he has had a clause that allows them to terminate if he "offends the community."

The pundits are saying he has a pretty good case, and I agree. He was after all expected to be controversial, and irreverent, which of course he was, and not just one time. Don Imus has been controversial and irreverent for as long as I can remember. It's what made him popular and now it's what ultimately brought him down.

I believe that Imus will win. He won't get the $120 million he is seeking, but he will get a big bunch of money, and probably without going to court. Easier and quieter to just pay him off and forget about it. CBS is unlikely to risk a court case, especially one that will undoubtably result in lots and lots of news coverage and may not necessarily go their way. They'll pay him off and hope he disappears.

Gilmore Girls

Oh No! Say is isn't true! After seven seasons the "Gilmore Girls" producer Warner Bros Television, has announced it's all over. Oh My, what to do...this has grown from a show I quickly turned off to one that I enjoy to watch.

I got hooked watching Rory and her Mom, Lorelei, played by Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham respectively, as they struggled with growing up a single mom of a single daughter, all the while resisting the efforts of their wealthy, overbearing Mother/Grandmother and weak, albeit sweet and wealthy granddad to bring them back to the fold and a livestyle of the rich.

But what made the Gilmore Girls so fascinating to watch was the dialogue, the fast patter between Mother and Daughter and to some degree Grandmother. These girls could spin it baby, and the resulting conversations, full of vocabulary, spoken very fast was enthralling to watch and hear, and stayed with me, although I couldn't come close to repeating it.

Graham and Bledel made it look easy. Apparently it wasn't. The dialogue took a big toll on the cast, and called for numerous takes to get it right which resulted in long days of rehearsals and in front of the camera trying to get it just right. But they did, and as I said, they made it look easy.

Gilmore Girls was real, and interesting, and a family show, something that I wasn't afraid to watch with my own daughters, and although it's kind of a 'chick flick' I always laughed and cried with Lorelei and Rory Gilmore.

The last episode is set to air May 15th.

Tom Poston Dead

Sad news out of Los Angeles today as it was announced that Tom Poston, a star of television shows like Newhart and Mork and Mindy died today at age 85. I remember him best as "George Utley" the somewhat bumbling handyman at the Stratford Inn on "The Bob Newhart Show" that starred Bob Newhart as the owner of a small country inn located Vermont. Tom was my favorite character on a show that had many memorable characters.

Although he often played one, Tom Poston was no fool. Here is a sampling of some of his accomplishments:

Flew troops to the Europe during World War II;

Studied two years at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts;

Made numerous guest appearances on:
"Studio One,"
"The Phil Silvers Show,"
"The Defenders,"
"Get Smart,"
"The Bob Newhart Show,"
"The Love Boat,"
"St. Elsewhere,"
"The Simpsons,"
"Coach,"
"Murphy Brown,"
"Home Improvement,"
"Touched by an Angel,"
"Will & Grace,"
"Dream On,"
"Just Shoot Me!"
"That '70s Show."
"The Steve Allen Show"
"To Tell the Truth."

(Didn't realize he had been on all those television shows did ya?)

In addition to his television credits, Tom Poston was also a hit on Broadway and in the movies, where his credits included "Cold Turkey," "The Happy Hooker," "Rabbit Test," "Christmas With the Kranks," "Beethoven's 5th" and "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement."

This list is far from all encompassing as Tom was in many, many shows in the early days of television and after, carving out a marvellous career, entertaining millions over the years.

Tom Poston 1921-2007.
